Essure™ Lawsuits

SERIOUS INJURIES AND DEATH ASSOCIATED WITH USE OF ESSURE™ PERMANENT BIRTH CONTROL SOLD BY BAYER

Essure™ was developed and promoted as a non-surgical form of permanent birth control. First approved by the FDA in 2002, it was marketed as a “non-surgical, worry free” alternative to traditional tubal ligation.

Essure™ consists of two small “plugs” made of a nickel-titanium alloy and stainless steel, wrapped in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers. These plugs are inserted by a physician into a woman’s fallopian tubes, where the tissue is supposed to grow around them, creating permanent obstructions in the tubes, preventing pregnancy.

Since 2002, the FDA has received some 10,000 reports of serious side effects, including death and fetal death (a tragic result of device migration) among women who were implanted with Essure™. Other serious effects reported include:

FDA orders Bayer, the maker of Essure™, to conduct safety studies

In early 2016, the FDA finally ordered Bayer to “undertake new safety studies to obtain more information of the benefits and risks of Essure™.” Seattle attorney Corrie J. Yackulic supports this action, though she notes that for the thousands of women who have already suffered as a result of Essure™, this may be too little, too late. According to Corrie, “Most people don’t know that FDA reporting of deaths and serious injuries from devices like Essure™ is voluntary. It is impossible to know how many unreported incidents there are.”

Ms. Yackulic has represented hundreds of Pacific Northwest women and their surviving family members who have brought serious injury or wrongful death claims as a result of dangerous medical devices and drugs, including Yasmin & YAZ, transvaginal mesh products, SSRI antidepressants, hip implants, and others.
